The first magazine cover I have chosen is from an issue of i.D magazine. The cover shows a mid-shot of a male and a female model kissing;neither of their facial expressions are shown. The magazine is controversial as they are both nude, the barcode sensoring the female model - this could be seen as a pun almost.
In between the two models, there is a cover line: 'I LOVE YOU X', this is bold and stands out to an audience as they want to understand why this is put there, it also relates to the image. This text also relates to the 'love hearts' sweets as the gap in between the two models also is in the siomilar shape. This relation to a childhood sweet connotes innocence and reminds us that this cover is not sexual, the image is simply of two people, kissing, who happen to be nude.

This second cover I have chosen is a cover from Japanese Vogue, with a mid-shot of Lady Gaga modelling the front cover. The image is very contrevercial and grabs the eye of the reader as she is obviously wearing a bikini of some sort, made from red meat. This could be seen as a pun or humorous to an audience as Vogue is a fashion magazine and therefore you would expect to see clothes on the cover. This meat outfit could possibly be taken as a sexual metaphor, wearing nothing but flesh, she is nude, to take this literally would mean that she is completely naked. The pose she is modelling appears strong, she appears to have status and could be taken as a femenist statement that women are strong and that they are 'not a piece of meat'.
This cover could also be seen as controversial as it could be promoting eating meat and therefore this cover could be taken offensively to a vegetarian and vegan audience.

This is the third cover I have chosen as a controversial magazine cover. It shows a long shot from above of Andy Warhol being swallowed by a Campbell's Soup can. This cover is controversial as it plays on the controvercy of Andy Warhol's vision of Pop Culture and how anything can become iconic art. His soup cans being widely known, this provides a huge selling point for a magazine.
The coverline above the image says that the American avant-garde is in 'total collapse', therfore this links to the picture and creates a pun; Andy Warhol - a huge patriot to american avant-garde - being swallowed by his own creation.
